Meeting Miriam Quiambao, First Runner-Up Ms. Universe 1999

The Blogging Beauty Queen (c’est moi) spent the day re-affirming beauty at the first I AM BEAUTIFUL Lifeshop at the Teltech Building on Boni Ave.  The Lifeshop turned out to be cooler than I thought it would be! Click here to see my first blog on the workshop.

Gemma towers over me!

Gemma towers over me!

First speaker – Gemma Cruz Araneta who won the Ms International pageant even before I was born. But look at her next to me, this beautiful 65-year old woman. I mean, doesn’t make-up stop working when you reach 50? And your genes when your 60? I’m SO glad she didn’t join MY pageant!!!

What I remember most with her talk was keeping an “Urbanidad” mindset – that’s remembering that we live in an urban society, surrounded by people and the beautiful ones are those who live with thoughtfulness toward their neighbors. She also endorsed Virgin Coconut Oil big-time (outside AND inside the body) so I’m buying a bottle of the stuff the next time I set foot in a mall.

Mr. Abundance - Carlos "Pido" Aguilar

Mr. Abundance - Carlos "Pido" Aguilar

Pido Aguilar, the organizer of the I AM BEAUTIFUL Lifeshop was quite entertaining with all his “voices”.   Yes, the man uses different voice characters to explain his points – it brings out a LOT of laughter.  At first you’re wondering, what happened to the dude’s accent?  He sounds German! Oh, now he sounds like a Chipmunk!  Later on you figure out that it’s his style!  He is after all, a multi-faceted kind of guy.

What i remember most about Pido’s talk is the importance of Self-Control and how the lack of it can make you ugly. Take for instance, the on-going sex vid scandal of Dr. Hayden Kho and starlet Katrina Halili – oh please tell me WHERE IS THE BEAUTY IN THAT?  But when you can control your thoughts, your words, your emotions, your appetite and turn away from lustful desires, then the beauty that is in you starts to SHINE!!!

I love Jimmy!

I love Jimmy!

I totally loved Jimmy Bondoc. At first, I couldn’t really understand why a singer was part of the line-up of speakers but there he was with his emo hair getting in the way of my photos.  Then as he shared with us, I found out why. Aside from being wonderfully candid he reminded us of many things beautiful when he sang us three songs. For Jimmy, beauty comes out when you go after your passion – in his case, music!

What i remember most is Jimmy’s song about UNLEARNING how to love someone – it made me cry.  He wrote it after he broke up with his fiancee – a break-up cause by religious differences that couldn’t be reconciled. Don’t you just hate it how religion can get in the way of life? Well, at least it has spawned what I believe is going to be a certified radio hit.

Soft-Spoken Beauty Queen

Soft-Spoken Beauty Queen

Finally, our lovely Miriam Quiambao stepped up on stage and captured our hearts with a Confessions-of-a-Beauty-Queen talk. Her topic – Beauty Emerging Thru Crisis

Well, Crisis seems to be one of the defining words of her career – remember her famous fall at the Ms. Universe Pageant in 1999?  And how she managed to land on 4 limbs with poise, get back on her toes with even more poise and then give them a bit of drama?  Well, that was one prophetic fall, the next one being a traitorous friend who cheated her of 10 years of savings.  Then she left her career for a marraige that would later fail. The struggle continues for Miriam but after attending a regular Bible Study, it seems like God has planted her feet on solid ground. And this time around, any falling she will do, will be straight into His loving arms!
