CZECH REPUBLIC -  Jitka Nováčková – 19 years old – 5’9″

Czech Republic - Jitka Novackova... glorious as spun gold...

Jitka Nováčková is one girl who knows her priorities. She picked career over love – at least for now. After winning Ceska Miss – the title that earned her the right to represent the Czech Republic in the Miss Universe 2011 – she had to leave her boyfriend of three years, Mark Gardener Ferenčík, in her hometown of Budejovice and move to the capital Prague. But a long-distance love affair did not work out for Jitka Nováčková so she decided that breaking up with Mark was the best thing to do. But she says they continue to talk and stay in touch because one day in the future, she might just find her way back to him. Awwwwwwww…. that is just so SWEET!

DENMARK – Sandra Amer – 21 years old – 5’9″

Denmark - Sandra Amer... slinky sexy sultry...

This Miss Denmark is actually half-Iraqi and half-Bulgarian. Isn’t that fabulous? I don’t know about you but I love it when the lines that separate the different nations and religions get blurred through such marriages and beauty pageants! Sandra Amer Hamad might not be Danish but she was born and bred in Denmark and grew up under the loving guidance of a Muslim Dad and a Christian Mom who encouraged her to join Miss Denmark.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Dalia Fernandez – 21 years old – 5’8″

Dominican Republic- Dalia Fernandez... fearfully made!

Dalia Fernandez of the Dominican Republic is pretty vocal about her faith which is something I really appreciate. Even in interviews, she isn’t shy about saying God is the source of her strength. In her opinion, everything God creates is perfect and good. But not everyone considers her perfect and good enough to represent the Dominican Republic in the Miss Universe 2011 beauty pageant. Dalia Fernandez has had her share of detractors but she keeps in mind what Jesus taught: No one is a prophet in his own land. However, she hopes that all the hard work she is putting into her Miss Dominican Republic stint will capture the hearts of all her countrymen and the Latino Community.

Ecuador - Claudia Shiess... as cool as the seabreeze...

This half-Ecuadorian, half-Swiss beauty queen puts a premium on her relationships. In spite of her busy schedule as Miss Ecuador, Claudia Shiess (pronounced Shees) manages to find time to be with her family, her circle of seven best friends and her boyfriend of 2 years, Jhonatan Castro.

I love it when Beauty Queens take advantage of the power of social networks! Like Egypt’s contestant to the Miss Universe 2011 beauty pageant is ALWAYS on Twitter. Sara El Khouly Tweets updates on the things she’s been up to in Brazil. She even mentions our very own Shamcey Supsup (Philippines) a couple of times! EL SALVADOR – Mayra Aldana – 25 years old – 5’7½”

El Salvador - Mayra Aldana... rawwwwwrrrrrrr!!!!!

I like Mayra Aldana, not just for her “I-am-wooman-hear-me-roar” type of beauty but because just like our own Venus Raj, she has tasted the shock of unfair dethronement. This was when Mayra Aldana won Miss El Salvador International 2010-11. She had mentioned during an interview that she would love to join a rival beauty pageant and right after the interview was published, her crown was taken away and given to another girl. Unfortunately, Mayra Aldana was not able to recover her crown. But she does have the El Salvador Universe crown now… let’s see if she can capture the Miss Universe crown too!

Oh, another reason to like Mayra Aldana – she’s been to the Philippines as El Salvador’s representative to the Miss Earth 2009!

ESTONIA – Madli Vilsar- 20 years old – 5’11″

Estonia - Madli Vilsar... like a fresh-faced highschool girl...

The one thing I like about Madli Vilsar is that just like me, she is quite frugal when it comes to clothes. So when she won Miss Estonia and had to build up a wardrobe for the Miss Universe 2011 contest, it was a nightmare for her. Plus the fact that she’s 5’11″ makes it difficult for her to find long-enough jeans and gowns to fill up three weeks of pageant competition in Brazil.

Another nightmare for Madli Vilsar was the wait for the visa to Brazil where Miss Universe is being held this year. First of all, they applied a bit late for it and then there were technical issues like faxes refusing to fax and email not getting through. Then she had to assure Brazil that she was going there for a beauty pageant and not to instigate a rebellion or something like that.

But all’s well that ends well, Madli Vilsar found sponsors for her wardrobe and got her Brazilian Visa in the nick of time!

OH! One more thing that connects me to Madli Vilsar is her passion for strawberries… We are both STRAWBERRY FREAKS!

FINLAND – Pia Pakarinen – 20 years old – 5’7″

Finland - Pia Pakarinen... one of the most perfect faces in this batch of beauties...

Finaland’s Pia Pakarinen is one interesting girl. According to her Wikipedia site she grew up living in an old school with a dog, cats and some chickens. And her parents too of course!  Then, sh’s got this hot boyfriend – Professional Footballer Niko Väyrynen. But what impresses me the most is how Pia Parkarinen, at age 20 is financially savvy, has her own business and is preparing for the future!

FRANCE – Laury Thilleman -20 years old – 5’10½”

France - Laury Thilleman... she will make them eat cake!

I have always looked up to the French and even spent two years learning their beautiful language…  and France’s candidate to the Miss Universe Laury Thilleman does not disappoint! This Business Management student who hopes to work in audiovisual communications or broadcasting spends her weekends playing a mean game of volleyball or surfing off the coast of Brittany. Laury Thilleman was ‘discovered’ by a photographer who met her while she was taking up modelling as a way to complement her studies. After winning the Miss France 2011 beauty pageant she moved to Paris to fulfill her duties. Laury Thilleman also spent two months in intense training for Miss U and even got involved in designing her National Costume which is themed after the infamous Marie Antoinette!

GEORGIA – Eka Gurtskaia – 25 years old – 5’11½”

Georgia - Eka Gurtskaia... a living mannequin...

We’ve joked about it often, that Radio DJs may have gorgeous voices but are ugly as sin in person! Well, Eka Gurtskaia is the total opposite; she is a Radio Journalist who is as pretty an angel. And just like any journalist, Eka Gurtskaia is persistent. She tried out modeling at age 16 but it didn’t work out. Then at age 21 she gave it a shot again and things clicked; her modeling career began! After a few years of professional modeling, her boyfriend and her friends urged her to join the Miss Georgia 2010 beauty pageant. She didn’t want to but they were so pushy that Eka Gurtskaia joined the pageant and won 1st Runner-up which gave her the right to represent Georgia in Miss Universe 2011.
