Sad that Dianne didn’t make top 5, but she made us proud by placing in the top 15, and bagging the internet vote!
I watched Miss International on the livestream link…it was delayed by a few minutes, with all the choppy feed and all. I think I may have damaged that refresh button, hmm.
IMO, I didn’t like the pageant that much. The broadcast was 3/4 Chinese. NOSEBLEED NA AKO.
Should’ve been in English, its an international pageant after all. The national costumes, evening gown, and swimsuit segments dragged on forever. I did like how the other candidates who weren’t in the top 15 were given more attention.
What was the basis of judging the winners? NO Q&A? HUWAT IS DIS. Then yung award ni Dianne, sash, with Elmo-esque stuffed pillow? HUWAT IS DAT. But who am I to criticize. I’m sure they worked hard for it, and for those who understood Chinese, baka it was nice for them.
DIANNE SHOULD HAVE PLACED HIGHER, NAKO PO. But nevermind, she’ll always be a Miss International to us.
Like many, I hoped for a crown tonight. But there’s still tomorrow.
Really, there is. Miss World 2011 – Gwen Ruais? Finally, a pageant broadcasted in English, and on TV. Wala nang paputol-putol, wala nang nosebleed.
Let’s pray!
Yes I really like the way how all the candidates were given screen time! Well, no Q&A siguro kasi they did all that with the judges at a separate event. Im sure they spoke to the girls to pick at their minds a little bit. What a strong showing from the Latinas ha. And interesting because Mongolia made it so high – Mongolia and China are not the best of friends… But I am proud of dianne’s achievement. We don’t always win in the internet voting so this is significant. I was also wondering if the Internet Choice automatically enters the Top 15? Was anything mentioned about that?
Natiis ko naman ang Chinese language… and okay naman ang girl who translated in English. Pero, yes, medyo dragging ang length ng talk points nila. Also, weird ang pag announce ng 3rd and 4th runner up. VERY ANTICLIMACTIC! And it was wierd also when they announced that all the girls got an Ambassador of Beauty Award then they called Aruba. The explanation was not so clear. Akala ko she won it. But hindi pala – they could not call all the girls to recieve the award so they went with the first girl on the alphabet – A-ruba. okay…
Naku, I am puyat na!!! I have to wake up early at 4am for work! I have to sleep na – nakakainis nga kasi tomorrow I won’t be able to watch Gwen… but someone will be feeding me updates on my phone!!!! Lets win that elusive Miss World Crown!!!!
I do not understand why she was sent to the pageant there were tons of other girls in Bb 011 that are more Miss International looking. Tumulak , Lastimosa even Manjon . So what if she joined last year! Anyway going back to Gwen she is awesome. I was watching MW The debate clips wow they are all intelligent great speakers and communicators. I really do not know why SMA even thought of sending Gatbonton in such a pageant last year. Thank God there is Cory Q now. At least SMA can focus on the Universe crown.
Hi Kyle, abq always supports Philippine beauty queens and is proud of both Gwen and Dianne. Thanks much
I thought Dianne did a great job — her top 15 placement meant she bested 52 other candidates including those from pageant powerhouses like Colombia, Dominican Republic, USA, and Australia.
I did notice that Miss International has been favoring Latina candidates recently. This year, 4 out of the 5 finalists were Latinas. Of the last 9 winners, 7 were Latinas, 1 from Spain and (thank God) from the Philippines.
Thank you Glenn for taking note of the nations we beat. It doesn’t make me happy when people minimize the achievements of our beautiful queens…
Congratsss Diane
Question Ms Joyce: ABSCBN reported that the winner of Ms Internet will automatically advance to the top 15— is this really the case?
Anyway- Im proud of the Diane- and way to go Philippines in the 2011
And Kyle– we all have our different opinions and preferences— but these girls won fair and square….. I think they deserve respect…. we are not required to cheer for the eventual winner- but I think its common decency to restrain from putting these women down….(SORRY Ms Joyce I cant help myself)
Jay, I am not sure about the Ms Internet being automatically promised a space in the Top 15. Either way, I am proud of Dianne Necio and the support we gave her.
Btw, I had to edit Kyle’s comment… and yes putting people down is really not the aim of this blog. BUt I do like to hear people’s opinions anyway… thanks Jay!
Dianne deserved her crown and if you watched the 2011 Bb Pilipinas Pageant, she nailed the Interview Competition. She won fair and square and she deserved her crown.
I thought that she’d win Miss International because her father died.
It would have been a poignant victory for Dianne if she had won…
I saw parts of the pageant on YouTube — yes, parts of it just dragged and dragged — and the crowning moment appeared so anticlimactic and so chaotic. Clearly, the pageant isn’t meant for international consumption and directed more to a local (Chinese) audience with its carnival-style pageantry. After watching their last three pageants online, it is apparent to me that the pageant organizers really don’t care about getting a wider audience. Next year, I won’t even watch it at all cause it’s so frustrating to watch, and I’m sure many other pageant watchers share this sentiment.
Naku Glenn, I am such a fan that I tend to ignore the tedium. In fact, I like long-winded pageants because it gives me time to blog. And go to the bathroom. And check on my daughter. And feed my chihuahua. LOLOLOL!
Lol! I guess I am being too finicky with my pageants. I suppose we should just be glad that Miss International hasn’t folded especially since the Philippines has had a very successful run with the most wins (four!) after Venezuela. I can only hope that the Chinese improve their presentation — but having over a billion television viewers within their borders, I suppose they can stage however they want.
Okay, question: Miss International has a preference for “regal” beauties — regal meaning one has a bearing of dignity, serene poise, etc. Do you think the recent Miss Philippines’ foray into the pageant’s talent competition worked for or against them? For example, while Krista’s dance moves (including splits) were awesome, one can only wonder if that somehow subliminally prevented the judges from giving her the title (I think she should have placed higher). Same with Dianne this year. Your opinion?
Hmmm… never really thought about that. Are the judges for the talent the same as the ones who choose the final set of contestants? You could be right about this. Maybe we need to be careful about the talents we show… I suggest Pole Dancing… JOKE!!! LOL! But no, really, I think you may have something here. Maybe we need to stick to mainstream or classic types of talent presentations. Like SHamcey’s drawing on the spot of a Mother and Child scene was very impressive. And Janet Noguchi’s singing in a beautiful red gown was wonderful. I think those kinds of talents bring out the beauty queen in the girls. But those who do hiphop or rap or rock songs etc… parang hindi bagay sa image ng beauty queen. I love rap and hiphop and i worked for a rock station for nearly 10 years but… I don’t really like seeing beauty queens rapping, break dancing and belting grunge songs. I mean, wouldn’t it be weird if you saw Venus Raj on TV rapping like a pro while doing a street dance number? As unfortunate as it sounds, there IS a beauty queen image and while that image is growing as the years go by, most judges, IMHO, subliminally have this idea of what a beauty queen should be like… and that is – regal, confident, feminine, graceful as a swan. Maybe we need to make sure our beauty queens choose talent presentations that will be in line with that description.
I watched the Pageant through streaming. I just don’t like it when Diane and the ladies used their national flag as sarong. It’s an insult to the nations because flags are national symbols. I don’t know if the National Historical Commission will reprimand Diane or BPCI for that.
I noticed that some girls did not use their flags? Or were my eyes fooling me? But yes, I feel like the use of flags as their tapis was too much for my Filipino side. The funny thing is, although I am half-American, I don’t find it offensive when they do that to the US flag. Maybe because I often see the US flag design being used in clothing?
While I love Dianne anyway, I would have been prouder of her if she had refused to use our flag as a tapis and instead carried a Filipino flag. Our constitution is very protective of the Filipino Flag and since I’m old-school in this area, I think it should remain that way.
I couldn’t agree more Ms. Joyce. Flags are sacred to us Filipinos. Hopefully BPCI should instruct their delegates next time.
Joyce — In reply to above post — “You could be right about this. Maybe we need to be careful about the talents we show…” I agree, absolutely. Miss International is still largely controlled by the Japanese and their more conservative ideal of what a beauty queen should be. I was surpised to learn that the Miss International pageant is a division of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the control of their Cultural Exchange Division. One of the pageant’s stated goals is to promote “proper understanding of Japan in international society” and “to promote Japan’s image.” http://www.miss-international.org/en/aboutICA.html
For example, the “tsunami” walk may not have its intended effect with a more conservative Japanese Foreign Ministry controlled board of judges. By this token, BB Pilipinas should train Philippine candidates competing in Miss International differently and be more careful about what talent is presented.
WE really need to train each girl according to the nature of the pageant they are being sent to. In my time nga, they would say – mestizas go to International, dark beauties to Universe. Miss Maja would normally be the type of beauty who would look good in a pusod and a Spanish-themed gown… things have changed of course but each pageant has it’s own character and we need to adjust accordingly…
yes i watch miss international 2011 and i find miss necio in higher placement and im very happy for her miss internet and web popularity award and top 15 thanks miss joyce and happy day
