Lorraine Schuck Tells ABQ: “I Did Not Accept Russian Bribe!”
The Miss Earth Franchise found itself in a huge scandal last year after Russian Media showed a 6 and a half minute report on the pageant with a portion of the report showing Lorraine Schuck, Executive Vice President of Carousel Productions and owner of the Miss Earth Franchise, talking to visitors who offered a $4M bribe for Miss Russia to win.
I saw the video myself and while it does seem incriminating, I wish we could have seen the entire conversation because it is very easy to edit something down to make a person look bad.
Personally, I think she was set up by journalists who were trying to bait her with an impossibly handsome offer so that they could get a story. They just didn’t sound like professional negotiators to me in the video.
Anyway, I had a very long chat with Lorraine Schuck today. She said she wanted to explain things in further detail because their official statement seems to be ‘not enough’. Some groups, she said, are still trying to push the scandal online. This is the gist of what she said to me:
“I believed that these visitors were sent by a powerful person who wanted Miss Russia to win. So I was being polite. You can’t just slam the door on the emissaries of a powerful person. So we talked for an hour and a half. Yes, the amount of 4 million Euros is big but not big enough for me to destroy the integrity of the Miss Earth Franchise. But I never accepted any bribe and Miss Russia did not win. And for the record, that video was taken without my knowledge and aired without my consent.”
“It was also very funny because the Russian news report called me – The Richest Woman in the Philippines – daw. But we all know that that’s not true! Maybe they thought I’m the wealthiest female here because I turned down a 4 million Euro bribe.”
Although the transcipt of the video (available on this site) says dollars was the currency, Lorraine always mentioned Euros in our chat. Aside from the videotaped visit, she says there were two more attempts after this first meeting to force her to make Miss Russia win but Lorraine says she politely declined.
“I think my biggest mistake was being too polite. That was my fault. Filipinos don’t just say no, they need to go around the bush a few times. If they aired the whole conversation then people would have a better idea of what really transpired.”
Apparently, this is not the first time Lorraine Schuck has been approached with a bribe offer to make someone’s favorite contestant win.
“There is always an attempt to bribe. And they do it in many different ways, sometimes subtle, sometimes straightforward. But I always find a way to say no. But with this one we were unlucky. I suspect that because the visitors were just emissaries, the boss wanted proof of what went on in the meeting so they secretly had video cams.
“Many times I said – No, it cannot happen. My problem is I’m nice to everyone, to the press, to people I’m dealing with. And, honestly, I didn’t want to close the door on these people in spite of the bribe attempt. I wanted to keep them as contacts while trying to say no politely.”
The former beauty queen lamented that even if she wanted to rig the results, it is not easy to ‘connive’ with the judges invited to Miss Earth because these are people with integrity to begin with.
“People just don’t understand the complexity of judging a pageant like Miss Earth. First, the judges themselves are people with integrity. What would they think if I told them that I wanted one girl to win? We also have to consider the chaperones’ scores. They are involved in helping us choose our winners. Once the judges place their scores, SGV collates it with the 5% chaperone score and they come up with a list of winners. If there is no question, the judges sign the list. I also can’t tell SGV who should win. They would never agree to that!”
“Besides, Mon (Ramon Monzon – President of Carousel Productions and owner of Miss Earth) and I have a policy that we are not allowed to include our favorites in the semi-finals unlike Donald Trump in Miss Universe. Yes, we do have favorites but they do not always win or even enter the semi-finals. Its funny because we have an internal ‘betting game’ on who might win. One hundred pesos lang yung bet namin. But the bottom line is, we don’t know who will win until the judges make their choice. Winning Miss Earth is not about bribery. It’s about destiny!”
I asked if she was willing to show the score sheets of Miss Earth 2012 to the public, something that might help clear the air.
“No, the scores are not for public viewing because we don’t want the contestants or their supporters to get mad at judges that scored them low. However, if a case is filed, we can request SGV to furnish all score sheets but only for the court’s eyes. In fact, Carousel Productions is most likely going to file a case against certain parties who made defamatory and libelous statements against us online. We are currently discussing our options with our lawyers.”
Lorraine Schuck says the whole brouhaha affected her in the beginning, but now she is laughing off the accusations.
“Bong Dimayacyac (Miss Asia Pacific 1983) called me as soon as the scandal broke out and asked me if I was okay. I said to her – I’ve never been better! The whole story is making Miss Earth more famous and I’m getting more calls from possible franchisees. The bottom line is that we did not accept a bribe and Miss Russia did not win. I was affected at the start but then I realized that news is still news. We are getting more attention now more than ever.”
While the video IS worrisome, ABQ still believes in the integrity of Miss Earth and Lorraine Schuck. For me, it will take more evidence than the Russian news report to prove that the Miss Earth crown is for sale.

Lorraine Schuck at the far right. ABQ Author, Joyce Ann Burton Titular on the left. More beautiful people in the middle!
Vid mix of the real journalist… and the bribe vid… you hae to learn how to deal with these kinds of people .

Very good article. Despite what happened I still support Miss Earth 100%. To the bashers, as if this only happened to Miss Earth. Who knows if it happened to Miss Universe and Miss World in the past. And since there was no internet at that time, there’s no way the scandal could spread.
And who gives a }()@* about GB? They destroyed their credibility when they added that Miss TQI (BTW, is cancelled for the second time) and Miss Supra. They don’t dictate to us which is the most important pageant to date. They have been trying to get rid of Miss Earth and have been prejudice about this pageant as well.
Because of this Miss Earth is becoming more popular and hopefully many countries would want to host this pageant. I hope this 2013 Thailand would host it.
Well, at least the media here hasn’t dethroned Miss Earth
they’ll still be reporting about Miss Earth like they always do. It will be VERY difficult for anyone to destroy the reputation that Miss Earth has built. While the video disturbs me and doesn’t make me feel good, I’d still put my faith in Lorraine Schuck rather than those Russian paparazzi pretending to be reporters.
I agree. Miss Earth has done so many good things that it cannot be overshadowed by just one fake reporter (unlike one website)
HOpefully, Miss EArth will now have more incentive to improve itself. I hope they use this as a lesson and learn from it. We must always beware of strangers bearing ‘gifts’…
To gain credibility, no PHILIPPINE representative in Miss Earth should place the semi-finals for 2 decades. It’s just so unacceptable that a Filipina places in a Filipino organized pageant.
it’s just like asking the Miss U Org not to let any Miss USA to place in Miss Universe…
So what’s good for the gander isn’t good for the geese? Is that it?
as a pageant organizer, i could never imagine approaching any or some of the judges to ask them to favor some of the girls so i would never ever believe that ms lorraine or any miss earth executive would dare do such thing
regarding the selection process that determines the semifinalists,
i am all for the certain percentage that gives chaperones,
organizers, production staff a say especially
when it comes to the behavior, discipline
and interpersonal skills of the girls
this way, those with perceived
attitude problems would be
weeded out.
BTW, Lorraine mentioned to me that when chaperones give very low scores they still have to investigate because it could just be a matter of personality clash. So even that, they scrutinize. Lalo na if the girl is a strong contender. So I really feel bad – nakuryente si Lorraine and she needs to be careful and more clear when she’s saying no but trying to keep the contact alive. Whatever the case, I hope it never happens again.
To be honest, I have felt pressured, on a few occasions, by co-judges who want one girl to win. Not because the girl they like is powerful or rich, but because yun lang talaga ang gusto nung isang judge na yun. I don’t give in but I also don’t say no outright. I just kind of sit there and say, “well actually, she’s really beautiful and deserving of the crown naman. Let me see what I can do.”
I will say that kasi nga, you just can’t say no to certain people. Not outright. But I always stick to my guns and score the way I feel. So just because I said that, it doesn’t mean I’ll allow myself to be pressured by that judge. Its crappy-sounding but that’s just how we Pinoys are, diba? So if someone videotaped me saying that, I’m sure it would sound really bad on my part. That’s why I am holding back a guilty verdict on Lorraine. I need super clear proof that the Miss Earth Crown is for sale.
And that video by the Russians is so tainted with malice!!! It opens with several scenes of poverty in Metro Manila and is 6.5 minutes long. NO decent Pinoy news program would dedicate all that time to putting down another nation over a beauty pageant! Mahaba na masyado ang 2.5 minutes for one report. DUH! Wala na yatang naibabalita ang Russian station na yan. Siguro, kasi hawak sila ng gobyerno at ng mga so-called ‘oligarchs’. My butt talaga.
Sorry, this whole thing just pisses me off. I gotta chill out….
I had the opportunity to organize and emcee not one but two pre- pageant events of Miss Earth here in Bohol. The first one was in 2002 with around 56 beauty delegates. they had a pre- pageant fashion show and swimsuit video shoot in Alona Beach.
The second one was back in October 13 2005 when more than 20 girls including eventual winner Alexandra Braun of Venezuela visited Bohol for some photo shoot and for Group 3′s Preliminary Talent Competition won by Miss Macau.
I never noticed any hanky panky and I even made friends with Peachie Veneracion.
By the way, based on what I saw in the video, Ms Lorraine Shuck was just being typically Filipino when the bribe offer came. Since she was talking to some foreign gusts, she was just being gracious and hospitable thus her facial expressions/ actuations seemed like she was amenable to the idea but she wasn’t. Off course, video editing can make it look like she was in for some shenanigan
Secondly, there is no way Ms Shuck and the rest of the Miss Earth core group would ever dare approach the judges to conspire in manipulating the results
To Ms Shuck, we’re behind you 100%. Who cares about GB? Like right now, Tourism Queen International & Supranational over Miss International? Duh
Thanks for sharing this! Lorraine is grateful for all the support and sends her thanks…
very nice article ms joyce thank you for shedding a light… Godbless lorraine & miss earth
its no longer “Save the Earth”… at this point its “Save MIss Earth” na
hehehe
Nice article– Id been meaning to ask your opinion about this scandal and was hoping you would write something about it
Now I am more than happy to see how you treated the whole thing… I love how you put it Ms Joyce. Bravo
About GB— everybody knows that the site runs a business like a beauty pageant- ME does not pay (well we need to confirm this) GB unlike MTQI and Supra (that we all know)…. and why should ME pay?—MU, MW and MI does not need to pay GB to be included in the list….. But if ME wants a better treatment from GB they have to pay–sadly, its all about the money (and Ms Lourainne knows this)…………Anyway, why do we even care about GB- I may not like Missosology (becoz of some policies) but that site enjoys more hits than GB.
I believe that ME should push for a BIGGER, ALL OUT PAGEANT this year— bigger prize for the winner (I dont see why they cant award at least 100,000USD to the grand winner), better production and better press coverage!— to put all those bashers to shame!!! I think this is the best revenge for ME!
I always love and supoort ME and I believe this too shall pass
Hi Jay, im letting your comment stand as is, even if there are things you mentioned that I cant verify. Golly, to put the Russian report, which looked so anti-Filipino, above the reputation of one of our own. Lorraine may not be perfect but she has never ever been malicious. We might not be totally happy with Miss Earth but I dont give a rat’s ass about some Russian Paparazzi claim. Oligarch my butt! Mga tuso lang yan, dinamay pa ang Miss Earth.
Oh, thanks for your comment, was so upset kanina i forgot to be nice… aahahahaha!
You’re most welcome Ms Joyce— I consider your opinion as one of those we should LISTEN and RESPECT in the pageant world 😊 and I must commend Lorraine for reaching out to you to further explain her side…
I just wanna say ME is a Filipino brand that reach global prominence in its field- and we must all be proud of it
I agree with you Jay…
Miss Earth should go all out this year! Bigger! Bolder! Better!
We should support Miss Earth for it is our contribution
to global beauty pageantry!
Mabuhay!
Pingback: DAY 37: Who’s the sinner in the Miss Earth scandal? | Haraya
Miss Earth remains as my 2nd favorite global pageants
and Thank you so much Miss Joyce for a wonderful article.
It is just sad that due to unverified reports of bribery and false accusation.
Miss Earth was removed as Grand Slam pageant by Global Beauties
Keep up the good work, Carousel productions.
Well, the video is shocking naman talaga. But still… not enough to convince me 100%. In the court of law you have to be 100% sure before you convict. Eh, I trust Lorraine more than I trust journalists like those Russians. They really sounded like they were baiting her. And using two cameras showed that they were really going to use it in a report if they found anything suggestive.
Eto pa, if they really were Emissaries of a supporter of Miss Russia why did they seem okay if next year nalang ang ‘set up’? KNowing Lorriane, I could almost hear brain thinking – how can I turn this into an opportunity without selling out? I have to be nice and find out more.
I want to see the full video before I make any judgements. I think we owe it to Lorraine Schuck and to all previous winners of Miss EArth.
No offense to all Russians including my cousin-in-law and to Miss Russia who was one of my Top choices because she was really pretty to be honest. And sorry to all journalists but there are some of us who are Paparazzi level na…
So true ma’am Joyce.
Miss Earth was not rigged and was not manipulated for Russia’s delight coz Carousel are professionals.
I hope it will be a case to be put into rest and Russians will do the necessary erratum.
Thank Ma’am Joyce and your article was again an informative one.
Do you have the answer from Lorraine about the controversial removal of Miss Earth as a grand slam pageant from G*B*?
That’s why she called me with this explanation. I think – and this is just my opinion – that she wasn’t happy with the removal. I don’t think anyone will be happy with that. Feeling ko talaga, these Russian journalists baited her with such a huge amount just to get footage. They really tempted her. I don’t believe they are emmissaries from a Russian oligarch. But, the video is there and it doesn’t put Lorraine in a good light. If GB wants to take it off it’s list, there’s nothing we can do. But from what I know, Lorraine and company are filing cases against certain groups that they feel are taking the scandal too far.
OH, I forgot to say, thanks for asking that question…
lets hope that Miss EArth gets past this dark cloud on it’s reputation… just wondering tho if ABQ readers believe that there is hanky panky going on…
They can never put a good person down. What a pathetic move to destroy Ms. Lorraine’s reputation!
