ABQ’s Photos at the Bb. Pilipinas Queens’ Reunion 2013!
Helloooo ABQ Readers! Just want to share with you photos of the beauties at the Bb. Pilipinas Queens’ Reunion last March 15, 2013 at Madame Stella Marquez Araneta’s home which is fondly called the “Bahay na Puti” or the White House. There are two or three beauty queens that I failed to identify, if you recognize them please leave a comment.
According to Stella Marquez Araneta, the Queens’ Reunion is the first-ever official gathering of all past (and present) Bb. Pilipinas beauty queen title-holders over the past 50 years outside of coronation nights.
It was my first time to see Madame Stella’s sprawling mansion which is grand but simple. An elegant home with a touch of history in it. We all gathered in the entertainment hall in front of the swimming pool and then had a ‘class picture’ at the grand staircase.
Anyway, I’ve got a gazillion photos to share with you and I’ll just let them tell you the story of what happened at the Queens’ Reunion!
PS: To eagle-eyed pageant historians out there, please leave a comment if you spot any mistakes in titles, years, names, spelling, etc. I also was not able to identify three beauty queens, please help!!
Scroll down to the very bottom of this post to see our “beauty queen class photo” at the grand staircase!

Anette Liwanag and Chiqui Brosas are batchmates from 1975. Anette was Bb. Pilipinas Miss Maja and placed 4th runner-up in her international pageant. Chiqui also placed 4th runner-up in Miss Universe, the same title that Venus Raj carries.

2-PIECE SWIMSUITS OR BIKINIS SHOULD NOT BE VERY SKIMPY, OR JUST WEAR MODERN BUT DECENTLY DESIGNED 1-PIECE SWIMSUITS
Hay naku! That’s the always suggestion, reminder, appeal, and earnest requests I’m always telling the BPCI in my comments in many pageant forums — to get rid of wearing those VERY SKIMPY bikinis in the Swimsuit portion, show or competition!
2-piece swimsuits can be worn as long as it’s not that TOO SCANTY that cover only the breasts/nipples and private parts of the candidates! What they wear have NO difference with what the a-go-go/adult/night club dancers; seductive, sexy, strip dancers; porn stars and men’s magazine porn models are wearing!
BPCI should REALIZE that THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT RUINS THE WHOLESOME IMAGE OF BB. PILIPINAS!
I always tell BPCI that Bb. Pilipinas MUST HAVE a DECENT IMAGE when it comes to Swimsuit matters — a presentation or show that’s for GP (General Patronage) that even children (grade schoolers & teeners), nuns, priests/pastors, moralists, feminists and Muslims ca watch! But they seem to be deaf and prefer to be the boldest of the bold in wearing those very skimpy bikinis!
This is my comment on the official Bb. Pilipinas Facebook Page:
‘Hope the golden candidates won’t be clad in VERY SKIMPY BIKINIS without any coverings during the parade.
Please, BPCI, the candidates are NOT porn stars nor porn models, not promoting porn, sexy movies/shows!
BB. PILIPINAS MUST HAVE A DIFFERENT, DECENT IMAGE! The beauty of figure (or form or shape of a woman’s fit body) can already be shown, revealed, or seen in tight-fitting 1-piece or 2-piece swimsuits that are NOT skimpy.
Please DO NOT display and showcase their “assets” to the public by clothing them with those VERY SCANTY bikinis that cover only their breasts/nipples and private parts! Yes, we are modern women but we must STILL HAVE and SHOULD RETAIN our SENSE OF DECENCY! Please take good care of the 50 Ladies! Thank you very much!

In Español or Spanish, dubbed “The Language of Culture and Romance” (which is the language and medium of communication used in the Miss Maja International Pageants), the proper and complete title of the global contest is “La Maja Internacional” with its English translation “The Maja International” or the most appropriate “Miss Maja International.”
‘Hope all Bb. Pilipinas-Maja International titleholders would be present on the grand, golden coronation night. Two of them almost captured and won the Miss Maja Int’l Crown by placing 1st Runner-up in 1973 (by Nanette Prodigalidad), and in 2004 (by Margaret Ann Bayot). The Philippines also got several runner-up placers and int’l award winners from 1973 to 2004.
It’s interesting to note one of the titleholders, Engr. Muriel Moral-Pandi, who won the Miss Maja Simpatica and Best in National Costume int’l awards in 1988. She’s the only Bb. Pilipinas major titleholder who is a Mrs. Universe-Philippines queen and titleholder who represented our country in the 2010 Mrs. Universe Pageant and won the Mrs. Universe-Intelligence, the first-ever-awarded Intelligence Title in the Universe.
Hi Ms. Joyce! The correct , proper, and complete title of our national queens who represented our country in the Miss Maja International Pageant (the global, Hispanic-inspired beauty competition) is Bb. Pilipinas-Maja International (with the word ‘International’) for the PROPER and COMPLETE TITLE of the global contest/pageant is Miss Maja International (with the word ‘International’).
Many pageant fans might think that you are hypocritical, biased or partial to these queens that you always write Bb. Pilipinas-Maja only or Miss Maja RU only (always omit the word International, while in Miss Young International, you ALWAYS put the word International when you can always write/say Miss Young only — there seems to be an air of bias and partiality here) when we know that YOU SURELY KNOW that they are Bb. Pilipinas-Maja International and Miss Maja International titles (it’s on the official Bb. Pilipinas website http://www.bbpilipinas.com/sub.php?c=m&b=maja and on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binibining_Pilipinas). You are an informed blogger of major beauty contests and we are very sure you have seen/read these sites already.
Please correct now the titles and kindly add now the word ‘International’ to Bb. Pilipinas-Maja and Miss Maja only titles that you’ve written in ALL photo captions and articles where these incorrect and incomplete titles are found, and in your future blog articles as well.
Thank you!
Hi Kris, it was unintentional. I will make the corrections when I can. To all Maja winners, my apologies for not writing down your proper and complete title. See you girls at rehearsals tomorrow!
Had been in hiatus for months (the university blocked this very beautiful, interesting and wholesome website for reasons I do not know. hahahahaha) that’s why I am excited to be here again.
I am very happy to see you get reunited with the other winners. Your accomplishments in the past 50 is something that will inspire the younger generation of aspiring Binibinis who will continue the quest for bringing more glories to the country where the most beautiful women lives.
Nako, together with the other commenters here, ipu-push ko na rin kayo na sana mai-feature ninyo dito ang mga wherabouts ng ating mga past Binibining Pilipinas titleholders. Surely, the fans miss them so much.
God bless and take care always. Mwah mwah hugs.
ahhhh, its nice to be banned sometimes, aahahahaha! maybe my bikini photos of beauty queens triggered the block, aahahahaah!
naku, i hope i have time to make your wishes come true… specially during off-season…
Busy season na rin po kasi talaga ngayon Ms. Joyce. After Binibini, there comes the other set of national pageants, tapos international na. I think yung January to February lang talaga ang slack season. hahahahaha
Ms. Joyce its BETSY WESTENDORP, kaloka san mo galing ang hestendorp! haha
aahahaahahaha! kaya pala something felt wrong when i was writing her name! i have a friend who’s family name is Hartendorp. and she’s an artist too. thanks for the correction. kaloka!
oi, teka… ikaw din… saan mo nakuha ang hestendorp! sabi ko hartendorp. pero mali. ang correct ay Westendorp, as you said.
anyway, kinorek ko na siya, at salamat sa comment mo!
To Betsy Westendorp, my apologies for confusing your last name with that of Hebe Hartendorp… I made the appropriate correction and it won’t happen again!
Josephine Singh Bautista is also Indian/Filipina. Sadly she succumbed to cancer. She looks like one of the candidates, Camille Nazar, , #12
Thanks for the info! Friend ko si Jo but did not know she was half Indian, wow!
Thanks to my friend, Tony Paat..
izza gonzales won the maja philippines in 1985 & josephine relucio bautista was maja international 1981 winner
Izza was my batchmate! And I was close to Josephine… I miss Jo Bautista…
I’m a Dove Girl and I like it!
Joyce Titular Burton, 18, Braziwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
Kaloka ka Basil!
WHERE IS ATE MaRgie Moran!???!????? KJ Ang peg nang lola?
Good question!
Ms. Joyce di po ba Izza Gonzales was your batchmate in 1985 and Josephine Bautista was the one who represented the Philippines in Maja Internacional of 1981po yata?
I hope you can also do a write-up on Madam Stella Marquez de Araneta. We hardly know anything about her except that she was the first Miss International and a Colombian married to a Filipino, Jorge Araneta. How many kids/grand kids does she have? Does she speak Tagalog? Her future plans for BB Pilipinas? Let’s face it, she is not getting any younger and I read that Pitoy is having health problems.
Well, Stella is very very private. The invitation to her home is very rare. It was the first time for most of us Queens to see where she lives. I have never heard her speak Tagalog. It’s either Spanish-accented English or Spanish. She always speaks in Spanish to her bff Betsy Hartendorp who is almost always a judge in all Bb. Pilipinas events. Even at her advanced age Betsy is always around. I love her!
Stella hates giving interviews in general. However, since Venus’ victory, she has become warmer and even hugged me during the Press Presentation of Shamcey, which really surprised me, because Stella has a very strong tendency toward being formal. I know she loves protocol and likes everything to be organized with name plates everywhere and a program to be followed. She is never ‘prepared’ to give speeches even if her name is on the program. It is funny because she will always say something like – I’m not prepared to say anything – and then she’ll give a short spontaneous speech.
Sometimes, when I catch her in a chatty mood, she will share something personal (how I wish I could pass on to you some of the little things she has mentioned to me!) or she will tell me something secret about the pageant. She is a wonderful woman if you get to know her. But I believe she is a VERY strict boss, judging from how her staff handles all events. They are VERY strict. If you are not on the guest list, you won’t get in. If you show bad behaviour, you’re in the doghouse.
But she really cares about the pageant. During events you can see her going around, talking to her staff, making sure everything is ready. She doesn’t just sit at her table waiting for people to go to her.
Pitoy naman, I used to model for him. As for his health, it is true, he is going thru a few ‘not so good’ things. He does not remember me anymore but he is always sweet and greets me like a friend who’s name he has forgotten. I don’t want to think too much about it because it just makes me sad. I have not seen him at any of the Bb. Pilipinas events (that I attended) this year and that makes me a bit worried.
That’s all I remember for now, but next time I get to see Madame Stella I will try to get more info out of her. If I’m not successful with her, there’s always Jorge who is far more chattier.
Hello Miss Burton,
Nice photos and nice blog. Anyway, I’m going to ask you a question. Whenever a BBP-Universe is going to be dethroned due to citizenship issues, your name always comes up. I’m pretty sure you’ve noticed this. According to legends, you were supposed to be a semi-finalist of Miss Universe ’86. However, because you had a US citizenship that time, you were replaced from the roster of semi-finalist. Now apparently, because of what happened to you, Madame Stella has made it a point to exclude certain candidates with dual citizenships from the Universe title. Supposedly, Katrina Dimaranan and Nicole Schmitz were rendered ineligible for the Universe title last year and it seems Mariel de Leon would also be ineligible this year. Of course, no one could forget the Venus Raj brouhaha in 2010. So I would like to ask you to address the elephant in Araneta and recount to us your readers, what really happened. I think this would make a really interesting blog post.
Thanks.
Reader
I am a US Citizen. Born in Cavite to a Filipina mom, grew up in Manila and studied in Manila schools. But my American Dad made sure to pass on the best parts of his culture to me. I have tried to get Filipino citizenship with my most recent attempt being Feb this year but the dual citizenship law doesn’t cover people born in my year (don’t ask what year aahaha!) But anyway, your question comes up every now and then. I think it is a prerequisite, (at least during my time) to be a citizen of the nation you are representing. As for not entering the semi-finals because of my citizenship, I’d like to believe that that’s true. Someone once told me that the US Citizenship problem should not have been an issue with the Miss U org because Puerto Rico’s Deborah McCarthy Deu is a US Citizen but all Puerto Ricans are US Citizens because their nation is a US territory. So it wouldn’t be a problem in her case. ANyway, I do wonder if I was the reason why Bb. Pilipinas started getting stricter with Citizenship.
Oh, and don’t forget, I was also controversial when I won Miss Young Philippines Int’l – I was underaged at the time and my 1st RU’s manager sued and made a big fuss about it in the media. It was a thorn in my side but I deserved it because it is true, I was underaged.
Anyway, I am just thankful that in both instances I was not dethroned and that Bb. Pilipinas still stood behind me in spite of the controversies. Most of all, in spite of the controversies, pageant fans have accepted me as the winner for both local titles, something which I will always be humbly grateful for…
Oh my God I have been missing a lot! I have been denying myself of any internet exposure for personal reasons, but hey! This sez it all. The only reason why I should really be on the www. Kudos to you, one of our timeless beauties! More power. Ur giving so much inspiration to so many people. Love yah!
Yes, use the internet for good reasons. Agree ako dyan. I limit my usage too, for positive things lang and when I spend too much time on the net, I also give myself a break by not going online. God bless you!
I missed Maria Isable Lopez…. Ruffa..walang kupas!
Kaloka talaga si Ruffa parang walang pinagbago…
I know classic Binibini!!! Got a message from Alice Dixon she really wanted to go daw but had taping til late and Krista naman is in Malaysia she too wanted to come and I think Maggie Wilson has patched things up with Madame I think has been in Binibini events since last year… I really wished Maggie joined a year later hindi pala siya qualified for the Universe title bcoz of her age… sayang
Kyle, thanks for the info, kaya pala wala sila! Si Alma Concepcion naman had school responsibilities. She is studying. Architecture ata or Interior Design, I forgot. But she wants to go to the next Bb. event with me…
yes, I think nga, Maggie and Madame are OK na…
Hi Ms. Joyce Thank you so much for updating us everything about beauty pageant. Kudos to you and keep it up! By the way, Ms. Joyce i’m eagerly waiting for your Bb.Pilipinas 2013 bets.
I am also eagerly awaiting my picks, AAHAHAH! The Press Presentation drove me mad. Too many beauties. Too few crowns to give away!
Congrats and thanks Ms. Joyce for the coverage. Nostalgic ang event na yan and I hope magkaroon ng TV special ang 50 Golden years ng BBP para meron kaming ma-download na pantago sa baul…haha!
That would be awesome ha? A nostalgic tv special… dapat talaga!
Wow– I just have to say that Ma. Venus Raj looks amazing. She lost weight and she looks ravishing…. of course, Shamcey and Janine look great too- but Venus is just blooming (in love kasi hehehe)
Ruffa G is also a goddess…. I mean she is almost 40 and she looks like that!!! wow- some women are just blessed with beautiful genes… of course, it helps that she is an actress and very well maintained
Its really nice to see all these beautiful women in one room- of course, it would be better if all of the past winners are present but I think that it is highly unlikely (possible but improbable)
Hope to see all of them again in the coronation night
Ms Joyce— any story on what transpired? It seems that there was a little program? would love to hear from you about what happened… thanks thansk for the pics
Hi Jay,
well, I was so busy trying to play 3 roles – beauty queen, blogger and bff to all the queens. I didn’t get to bond so much with them but let me just upload my press presentation photos first!
Joyce, perhaps you’d want to start a series on past Bb. queens and where they are today.
passerby,
it is about time…
paging Ms Joyce
aaahahahaha! youre all ganging up on me
lets see if i can squeeze it in my packed schedule
i have wanted to do that for a long time na! Time is the problem. It is crazy juggling current pageants with the things going on in my life… but perhaps with some
judicious time management and better organizing, i can do it becuase it is, truly, a fab idea!
the girl on the right end is Danielle Castano bb Pilipinas World 2008
Yes! I interviewed her a couple years ago! Did not recognize her!
The lady in between Evelyn Camus and Sharon Hughes is Fortune Aleta Ledesma , Nini Ramos Licaros’ first RU in Miss Intl. Philippines 1968. Ledesma was at a time thePhilippines’ Honorary Consul to The Principality of Monaco.
It’s great to some of the revered Bb queens of past and recent. You all look great! Pero ang dami yatang kulang like Margie Moran, Auau Pijuan, Simonette Delos Reyes, Gem Padilla, Tere Licaros , Criselda Cecilio, Maricaf Mendoza, Nini Licaros ,Zora Andam, Charlene Gonzales, Alma Concepcion, Liz Berroya, Lia Andanar, JeanSaburit , Alice Dixon , Abbygale Arenas, Yeddah Mendoza,Daisy Rees and other Phils based Bbs. Understandable absent yong mga based na sa abroad like Guada Sanchez, Mimilanie Marquez, Armi Barbara Crespo, Liz de Padua, Czarina Zaragosa , AileenDamiles, Nanette Prodigalidad, Pebbles ASIs, Ligaa Pascual, Thea Robes etc. Ma. Isabel Lopez, Krsta Kleiner, Maggie Wilson and other so called ‘prodigal ‘ Bb. queens presence would have added a significant meaning to the Golden occasion – para bang forgive and forget lang ang peg. Hopefully mas bongga at engrande ang attendance at participation ng mga past and recent Bb. queens come Coronation Night. Sana may special feature about our past and recent queens din.
Thanks Joyce for the Bb queens reunion write up and pics. Sana more insider insights of said occasion next time.
hi bridget,
i agree. some insider info pls and what happened to the prodigal daughters led by Maria Isabel Lopez
I sorely miss the class of 1987 (pebbles, lourdes, luisa and avon)
i love maribel and i love madame stella and yes there is trouble between them. siguro its not yet time for them to meet. their personalities seem to clash and theres not much we can do about it except pray that God will heal the rift. I wanted to and was going to ask Maribel to come, but the time was not right…
jean and simonette were there. im sure about simonette coz we chatted but my photos with her were blurry. ricky lo’s column by celso caparas said jean was therr but i did not see her. i did have to leave after the class photo was taken so baka jean came late like gionna. gionna arrived just in time for the class photo which we tooj at around 6pm… yes, maraming wala, but all in all it was a successful reunion!!!
*correction Janette Fernando is bb. Pilipinas 1993 not 1983
Don! Thank you, duling na ako with all the years i was typing, aahahahaha! Will fix it when i get to my laptop mamaya…
The 5th girl on that photo (before Karla Bautista’s) with Lara, Isabel, Czarina and Dianne Necio is Danielle Kirsten Castano, 1st runner up Bb. Pilipinas 2008 and was elevated to Bb. Pilipinas World after Janina San Miguel resigned.
The third lady in printed blouse with Des Verdadero and Jane Brummitt is Ma. Bella Nachor, Bb. Pilipinas-Maja 1984. She is also on FB using her nickname Memeth Nachor.
Thanks much! Will fix the caption when i get to my laptop later…
