Botswana returns to the Miss Universe scene after a five-year absence with it’s 2010 representative Tirelo Ramasedi!
Although Botswana has sent only five queens to the Miss U (including Tirelo Remesedi), this Southern African country has ONE Miss Universe it holds dear – Mpule Kwelagobe who snatched the Miss Universe 1999 crown away from the Philippines beloved Miriam Quiambao who landed in second place. Mpule also holds the distinct honor of being the first black contestant to win Miss U.
Will Ramasedi Tirelo bring back the glory to Botswana? Well, we know that this 5’6″ native of Gaborone is smart enough for the crown! In her national pageant in Botswana, Tirelo Ramasedi impressed judges in the Q&A portion. When she asked about the role of diamonds in terms of the economic development of Botswana since independence, she replied that diamonds have provided Botswana with revenues that go to free health and educational services. She even cited stats to boost her response saying that 33% of Botswana’s gross domestic product is generated solely from diamonds which she says, proves that the precious stone plays a bigger role in her country’s economy.
