Why does Miss Guam Universe 2010 Vanessa Torres seem so Pinoy? Because there are so many 2nd and 3rd generation Filipinos living on the beautiful island of Guam. Her parents are Rose Siguenza, Andrew Bautista and Manny Torres. I mean, how much more Pinoy can that get? LOLOL!
The cool thing about the lovely Vanessa Torres is her volunteer work at the pediatric ward of the Guam Memorial Hospital. She says it’s her “proudest personal accomplishement.” To give the pediatric ward a face lift, 5’6″ Guamanian beauty queen painted cartoon characters on the walls. She says the effort was well worth it; now the kids feel loved and have a happier place to stay in!!!
With that accomplishment, it isn’t a surprise that Vanessa Torres also won a special award in the Miss Guam beauty pageant – The Cecilia Bamba Award which recognizes community involvement and good academic performance.
The question asked during her pageant was: As the new Miss Universe Guam you will have a powerful voice. What issues will you address and what will your purpose be?
Torres’ winning answer emphasized the cultural preservation of island, its language and history.
“It is through our culture that the people have our own specific kind of identity and one way to continue that culture is through education in the schools and also at home. That’s one issue I would like to pursue as Miss Universe Guam.”

How can a Filipina be Miss Universe Guam if she’s not a Chamorro. Use your head.
There were a few Misses in the Miss Universe who were not originally from their countries. Miss UK was Latina, for example
you’ll have to redirect your comment to the Miss Universe local organizers. And I double-checked my article and I don’t think I said she was Filipino. It’s just interesting that they have Filipino-sounding names and I think that is cool…
Just to let you know; those names (torres, siquenza, bautista) are actually Spanish, not filipino or even chamorro. Although you can find lots of the above in both the philippines and guam, you can also find them in mexico, puerto rico, etc.
Right you are! With the Spanish occupying the Philippines for about 300 years, it was inevitable that Spanish influence would seep into everything including our bloodlines and names. So those names are indeed Spanish in origin
but since I am writing to a Filipino audience, they’d all recognize those names as “Pinoy sounding”.
Of course Guam too went thru a period of Spanish colonization so we have MUCH in common!!!
