Miss Indonesia, Qory Sandiorova

Qory Sandioriva, Miss Indonesia 2009 (Indonesia Puteri) is another brave Indonesian Muslim girl to compete in a swimsuit and not wear the traditional head scarf. In fact, she’s the first contestant from the Sharia-ruled province of Nanggaroe Aceh Darussalam to ever to compete with head exposed. Qory is also the youngest (age 18) to ever win Miss Indonesia.

This 5’8″ doll-faced model was born in Jakarta to an Aceh-nese mother and a Sundanese Father (not to be confused with Sudanese. The SuNdanese people are from west Java). Growing up she spent her free time singing in school choirs and says her passion in life is to play the piano and sing.

Aside from that, Qory Sandioriva dreams of becoming a diplomat and maybe even president of Indonesia one day. She is currently studying at the University of Indonesia and is majoring in French Lit with plans to enrol in International Relations.

Qory Sandioriva’s current biggest challenge, while preparing for the Miss Universe 2010, are English classes. She says she finds it difficult to speak in public if it is not in her native tongue. But she says she is learning to engage with the audience through body language and eye contact. Nevertheless, Qory Sandioriva says she will have an interpreter during the Miss Universe pageant to make sure her message comes across clearly.

Part of her preparation includes following international news to keep up with the latest. Qory Sandioriva also has to keep track of tiger conservation developments since she also happens to be Indonesia’s Tiger Ambassadress. Included in her preps for Miss U: spa visits for skin treatments and herbal supplements for staying slim.

While all that sounds rigorous, Qory Sandioriva says she’s not going to push too hard in her bid to win the Miss Universe 2010 crown. She plans to just walk through it naturally.
