Miss Netherlands Universe 2010 Desiree Van Den Berg is a chatterbox! By age 1-and-a-half she could talk fluently but the name Desiree was difficult to pronounce so she called herself “Jeejee”. Not only was she talkative as a child, she was also VERY malikot and almost drowned at age 3 when she jumped into a lake believing she could swim. Thankfully an 11 year-old boy plucked her out of the water and if not for him, we wouldn’t see Desiree Van Den Berg walk the Miss Universe stage this year.
Aside from being a talker, the 5’9″ walking sunflower was very active growing up. Here are just some of the activities Desiree Van Den Berg enjoyed: hockey, swimming, scouting, tennis and dancing (ballet to be specific!)
When she was 12 years old, life suddenly took an interesting twist – her Father had to move to America for work and so the whole family (including her brother and sister) relocated to New Jersey where she finished high school. And because home was a 30-minute drive from New York, Desiree Van Den Berg spent many weekends there watching Broadway shows and shopping.
At age 18 Desiree’s family returned to the Netherlands where she was accepted by her dream college: the University of Amsterdam to study her dream course: Medicine. Ever since she was a child she talked about becoming a doctor so she could help people. Currently she is at the end of her third year of studies and once she completes her education, she hopes to work with the destitute in Africa.
