Miss Philippines Universe 2010, Maria Venus Raj
Maria Venus Raj is one of the hottest and most promising beauty queens to ever come out of the Philippines! She began her life on the beauty pageant lane by joining local beauty pageants in her province of Bicol. After proving victorious on the provincial level, Venus Raj joined Miss Philippines Earth in 2008 and won one of the main titles – Miss Eco-Tourism. Two years later, she entered the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant and won the Universe crown.
But less than a month after her coronation, fans were greeted by news on prime-time TV that the organizers of Bb. Pilipinas had dethroned her for ‘inconsistencies’ between her birth certificate and verbal birth account. This was very upsetting for Venus Raj because from Day 1 she had never hidden the curious history of her birth from the pageant organizers. She says that if they had objections to her birth history then they should have not allowed her to compete in the first place.
Because of this, Venus Raj decided to fight for her lost crown. And fight hard she did with the help of lawyers, politicians and fans who supported her. TV stations and newspapers even featured her story of growing up as a dirt-poor farm girl who excelled in school and graduated from college with a degree in Journalism plus honors. That story combined with what seemed like an unjust dethronement only made her more endearing to the Filipino masses. People wanted her back.
With the snowballing clamor for Venus to be reinstated, Bb. Pilipinas Charities reconsidered it’s decision and said it would reinstate Venus Raj for humanitarian reasons, as long as she can get a Filipino passport. The short of it is, Venus got her passport and her relationship with Bb Pilipinas was restored.
And so it’s been settled. Venus Raj is THE Philippine representative to the Miss Universe 2010 in Las Vegas!
