Miss Universe hasn’t had a contestant from Sri Lanka in two years!
Last year no contest was held and the year before that, the winner, Faith Landers withdrew. Hopefully, the return of Sri Lanka in the form of Ishanka Madurasinghe will give the country a big splash and maybe a better chance at the Universe crown. Sri Lanka has never won the Miss Universe and it’s best performance was in 1955 when Maureen Hingert reached 2nd Runner-up so I’m sure the kababayans of Ishanka Madurasinghe are crossing their toes and fingers for their candidate this year.
Out of 12 dark Sri Lankan beauties, it was Ishanka Madurasinghe who was chosen to wear the crown of Revlon Miss Universe Sri Lanka – yes, that’s the complete name of her title. Looks like Revlon more than ‘owns’ the Sri Lankan beauty pageant and that kind of makes me upset because things like that don’t do anything to help improve prestige, IMHO.
But that doesn’t take away from the beauty of this year’s winner – Ishanka Madurasinghe, a 5’8″ stunner from Kegalle. Doesn’t she remind you of our own current Bb. Pilipinas World Czarina Gatbonton? Gorgeous and dusky!
Ishanka did well on the local level winning not just the main title of Miss Universe Sri Lanka 2010 but also grabbing the Healthy Hair award. She does have thick, dark tresses that just make you want to run your hands through them! Or slap her silly in my case, LOLOL!
Some intesting trivia I dug up about Ishanka Madurasinghe:
She’s a university student taking up history at the Kelaniya University and hopes that her experiences in her studies will help her represent her country better in the Miss Universe 2010 beauty contest.
Ishanka Madurasinghe is also a Theravada Buddhist just like the majority of her Sri Lankan countrymen. Theravada Buddhists believe life is a continuous and analytical process and not just a mere set of ethics and rituals.

What is really sad is the lack of support she had from her own people. They are too busy drooling over Jacqueline Fernandez. Ishanka wasn’t even offered a translator it seems or mercy.
